Choosing outdoor wall lights

Size: go bigger than you think

Wall lanterns look smaller outside than they do in the box. Beside a front door, choose a single lantern about a third of the door's height, or a pair about a quarter of it. On a double garage, a pair either side of the door or a lantern between doors looks balanced.

Mounting height and spacing

Mount wall lanterns so the light sits slightly above eye level, typically 1,700–1,800mm from the ground. Fix them 150–300mm out from the door frame. Along decks and walls, space them every 2.5–3m.

Finishes for NZ conditions

Black and bronze hide weathering and suit most cladding. Aged zinc and brass develop character over time. Near the coast, choose from our coastal-rated lights, made to resist salt air and UV.
