How to choose wall lights
Wall lights add soft, eye-level light that ceiling lights can't, and they free up bedside tables and narrow hallways. Start with the job the light needs to do: wash a wall with ambient light, give focused reading light, or highlight a picture.
Bedroom and bedside wall lights
Bedside wall lights replace table lamps and keep surfaces clear. Swing-arm sconces such as the Hinkley Arti can be angled onto a book and folded back when you're done. As a guide, mount bedside lights 1,200–1,500mm above the floor, about 750mm either side of the centre of a queen bed, and plan the switch within reach of the pillow.
Hallways, living rooms and stairs
In hallways and living areas, sconces are usually centred 1,600–1,800mm above the floor, a little above eye height so you don't look into the bulb. Space them 2.4–3m apart along a hallway for even light. Shades that throw light up and down make ceilings feel higher.
Picture lights
Picture lights such as the Hinkley Arti picture light mount above a painting or mirror and wash it with light. Choose a light about half to two-thirds the width of the artwork, mounted so the light falls across the whole piece.
Installation and bulbs
Our wall lights are hardwired, so a licensed electrician installs them, and our American fittings are factory-converted to meet AU/NZ electrical standards. Most take a standard E27 bulb. Candle-style designs usually take the smaller US E12 candle bulb, which an E14 bulb won't fit. Each product page lists the bulb it takes, and we stock E12 LED bulbs. Warm white (2700K) suits bedrooms and living areas.
