Buying guide

How to choose a chandelier

A chandelier is usually the largest light in a room, so scale matters. Too small and it looks lost; too big and it overwhelms the space. Use these rules of thumb, then check the dimensions on each product page.

Chandelier size for a room

Add the room's length and width in metres and multiply by 8 for a suitable diameter in centimetres. A 4m × 5m living room suits a chandelier around 70–75cm wide. In rooms with high or raked ceilings, go up a size.

Over a dining table

Choose a chandelier about half to two-thirds the width of the table, and hang it with the bottom 750–900mm above the tabletop. For long tables, a linear chandelier such as the Geneva 10-light lights the full length more evenly than a single round fitting.

Entries, stairwells and hallways

Keep at least 2,100mm clear beneath a chandelier anywhere people walk. In a double-height entry, hang it so the bottom sits around the level of the upper floor, where it can be seen from both levels.

Height adjustment, weight and installation

Most of our chandeliers come with several stems or a length of chain, so the drop can be set on site; each product lists its maximum height. Larger chandeliers are heavy, so your electrician will confirm the ceiling can support the fitting. Every fitting is factory-converted to meet AU/NZ electrical standards.

Bulbs and dimming

Chandeliers look best dimmed. Use dimmable LED bulbs with a compatible dimmer, in warm white (2700K) for a soft, flattering light. Most of our chandeliers take the smaller US E12 candle bulb, which an E14 bulb won't fit; each product page lists the bulb it takes, and we stock E12 LED bulbs. Shop light bulbs.
