How to choose bathroom vanity lighting

The best bathroom lighting puts light at face height, not just overhead. A single ceiling light casts shadows under your eyes and chin. Lights at the mirror fill those shadows in, which makes shaving, make-up and skincare easier.

Above the mirror or either side?

Either side gives the most even light on your face and suits most single vanities. Mount a pair of sconces with their centres about 1,600–1,700mm from the floor (around eye height) and 750–1,000mm apart, so they frame the mirror.

Above the mirror suits wide or double vanities and mirror cabinets with no room at the sides. Mount the light 75–100mm above the top of the mirror, usually 1,900–2,000mm from the floor, and choose one around two-thirds to three-quarters of the mirror's width.

Bathroom zones and damp ratings

NZ wiring rules (AS/NZS 3000) set zones around baths and showers where fittings need a higher ingress protection (IP) rating. Most of our American vanity lights are damp-rated: made for bathrooms, but intended to sit outside the wet zones, beside or above the vanity. Check each product's rating. A licensed electrician installs hardwired fittings and will confirm placement for your layout.

Finish and glass

Match the finish to your tapware: polished nickel and chrome sit well with chrome taps, heritage and lacquered brass warm up a classic or Hamptons-style bathroom, and black suits modern and industrial schemes. Opal and etched glass soften the light; clear and seeded glass give more sparkle with a frosted LED bulb.

Bulbs and colour temperature

Most of these fittings take a standard E27 bulb, so you choose the brightness and colour. A few take a G9 capsule or have built-in LEDs; each product page lists the bulb it takes. Warm white (2700–3000K) is flattering in the evening; a neutral 3000–3500K helps with make-up. Use dimmable LED bulbs if the light is on a dimmer. Shop light bulbs.
